Why The Musician's Addition Flute Is Great For Marching Band

Musician's Addition Flute Marching Band

Marching band is unlike any other musical ensemble. Between the music, the coordinated march, the heat... let's just say marching band is intense. That's why it's a good idea to have an instrument just for marching band, and not your most expensive instrument either. In this blog post, we're going to take a look at what you should look for in a marching band flute and why the Musician's Addition Flute is great for marching band.

Why Have A Separate Flute For Marching Band?

Marching band is pretty rough on an instrument. If you've never been in marching band, you only see the polished work of the band and probably think the musicians are careful with their instruments. Generally speaking, they are, but accidents do happen and the flute is exposed to the outside elements. If you were to speak to someone who has a $30,000 flute if they would use that flute for marching band, you'd get a a big heck no! Many musicians have a separate flute for marching band so if anything happens, their main instrument is still good to go.

What Should You Look For In A Marching Band Flute?

Flutes have different options when it comes to the materials they are made of and extra features. When it comes to a marching band flute, you want something that's easy to play, easy to hold, and something cheaper. Let's look further:

  • Materials: Metal flutes are most common for marching band flutes - particularly nickel. Depending on the marching band, some players have switched over to plastic flutes. Flutes that SHOULD NOT be used in marching band would be wood flutes, and materials made from precious metals, like gold or platinum.

  • Closed-Holes: Remember, there is a lot of moving around in marching band, so you want to make sure you get a flute that's easy. Most players opt for a closed-hole flute so they don't have to focus on covering the keyholes.

  • C-Foot Joint: Not that this is a make-or-break kind of deal, but almost every flute found in marching band has the C-foot joint. Why? You won't ever be playing low B in marching band. In fact, it's rare to play even low C.

  • Offset G: The offset G is favored because it's easier to play G and A flat. Inline is a litte bit more of a reach.

  • Split-E Mechanism: This one is personal preference. Some people love it, some people dislike it, other's don't even know they have it. We love it just because it helps get that high E out easier.

THINGS TO AVOID:

  • C# Trill Key: This is an added cost. It won't hurt you to get this feature, it's just not needed.

  • D# Roller Key: We generally are not playing that low or switching around those keys for marching band. Once again, an unnecessary cost.
